An excellent place to start for those of you with little or no experience in the marine industry, whether within the towing sector or elsewhere, is to get hold of a copy of the Mariner’s Employment Guide from Marine Techniques Publishing in Augusta, ME. Mr. James Pelletier, a very experienced licensed Marine Engineer, has really put out an impressive and comprehensive how-to manual for anyone trying to break into the marine industry. Veteran mariners will also find it useful for “lateraling over” into another sector. This is highly recommended for your bookshelf or as a gift to someone just starting out. Mariners on the gCaptain forums have had good things to say about Leonard Lambert’s The New Hawespipe: A Comprehensive Guide to Merchant Marine Licensing & Documentation, so you might want to consider that as well if you’re starting out from scratch.

The very comprehensive (but not all-inclusive) list of companies compiled below is here solely for your convenience. The MTVA does not warrant any particular company for providing reasonably safe and financially rewarding employment. The burden of doing the research and finding suitable employment is your responsibility. Our advice? Networking, networking and more networking. That is how you find out who to work for and who to avoid. Try the forums at Tugboat Life or gCaptain if you’re looking for wage or other info on specific companies. gCaptain has also added a new JOBS page that appears to be well done. Avail yourselves of it.

For the self-starters amongst you, we’ve put up links for virtually every major, mid-size and small company we could find. Some companies, even today, still don’t have websites. Crazy, huh? In a few cases we’ve listed companies that are known to us, but don’t have sites, by putting up a link to the contact info that showed up in a web search. Beyond that, we gladly accept submissions for any we’ve missed. Some companies have contracted with various maritime labor unions for meeting all or part of their manning needs. A list of links to these unions is located on the Info page.

Although we normally don’t recommend the use of headhunters (hiring agencies) to secure employment, there are exceptions to every rule. That exception is called, wouldn’t you know it, Maritime Headhunters of Greenbank, WA. Captain Kelly Sweeney is one of us and enjoys a sterling reputation. If you need some help finding the right job for you give him a call.
