Photos Of The Week – 4/19/10

Built in 1966 at Marinette Marine in Wisconsin, the tugboat formerly known as Piqua is now the 4,000hp z-drive tractor tug Ellen McAllister. It has a U.S. Navy pedigree…..

…..as YTB-793, serving in Boston Harbor and Scotland. The Ellen is seen here alongside a tanker on the Arthur Kill’s Gulfport Reach, passing Conoco’s Bayway Refinery and the Grasselli Powerhouse. The owners of this ship have considerately included clear labeling so that the assist tug’s operators don’t forget where to go. How nice!

  1. my take on the ship labeling is that it’s intended to indicate to onlookers that said-vessel–visible or invisible–being pointed to in this fashion shall be referred to as tug
